Here’s a somewhat controversial topic: the correlation between a gay man’s frequency of unprotected sex in the late 70s / early 80s, before the existence of AIDS was known, and the likelihood of him contracting HIV.. . After AIDS was discovered in 1981, right wing homophobes attempted to demonize gay men who’d contracted the disease, claiming God was punishing them for their immoral behavior. The belief that gays deserved death because we’d been licentious took years to overcome, aided by the eventual spread of the disease to other non-gay portions of the population.. . Transmission of HIV is not a result of immoral behavior. The disease has no conscience and doesn’t discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. If you’re exposed to it, you risk contracting it. As minuscule as the risk may be, seroconversion (becoming HIV positive) from one exposure can and does happen. But, the more times one is exposed to it through unprotected sex with a carrier of the virus, sharing needles with an infected person, or a transfusion of tainted blood, the greater likelihood there is of one contracting this dreadful disease. I recently interviewed Cliff Morrison, the nurse who set up the first hospital ward exclusively for AIDS patients, in San Francisco in 1983. He mentioned he’d been sexually conservative when he first moved to San Francisco in 1979, which might be why he avoided contracting HIV. I’ve often said I might have “dodged that bullet” for the same reason, as I was less sexually active after coming out in 1976 than most of my gay male friends (although it could have merely been my good fortune or the result of a stronger immune system).. . I recently discussed this with a friend who’s been HIV positive for 3 decades. He warned me that even mentioning the frequency of sexual activity and transmission of AIDS in the same breath risks demonizing sexual behavior and blaming the victims for their plight, even if it’s unintended.
